There?s some great news for lovers of authentic Mexican food. Mexican
Radio, whose New York City restaurant has been repeatedly chosen by the
New York Press as the best Mexican restaurant in the city, has opened a
new location on Warren Street in Hudson. Mexican Radio?s beautiful and
colorful new location features award-winning, top shelf margaritas and
scrumptious home-style Mexican cooking. Owners Mark Young and Lori
Selden opened the Hudson branch of Mexican Radio in June of 2003, and
ever since then people have been flocking to the restaurant in search
of the best Mexican food around.
The interior of the restaurant was clearly designed to have the feel of
a rustic Mexican eatery: the walls are painted in warm desert oranges
and yellows, and charming works of folk art hang on the walls. The
result is a setting filled with comfort and warmth, a place where a
group of friends can gather to share some great food and good times.
The staff is equally warm and friendly, and make everyone feel welcome,
from the largest group to the diner eating alone.
Mexican Radio?s menus celebrates the fabulous flavors and rustic
textures that encompass the basics of Mexican ?comfort? food. Many of
the items on the menu are meant to be shared?this is a true family
affair. Most, if not all, of the favorites of Mexican appetizers and
entrees are on the menu?including Chile Relle?os, Nachos, Burritos,
Chimichangas, Tacos, Tostadas, Enchiladas, Flautas and Fajitas?and many
of these come with a choice of chicken, beef or roasted vegetables as
fillings or toppings. There are a few house specialities as well,
including the Radio Roll-Ups?their own creation of black beans, cheese
and pico de gallo, rolled into a flour tortilla, deep fried and served
on a bed of fresh tomato-jalape?o salsa. They also offer Mexican Spring
Rolls?a fresh mix of corn, mushrooms, scallions, peppers, Boston
lettuce and guacamole rolled into a spring roll wrapper and served with
a smoky raspberry chipotle peanut sauce.
For lighter eaters, there are several salads, including a House Salad
with fresh greens, a Caesar salad (which, coincidentally, was invented
in Mexico) and a Taco Salad. A more exotic choice is the Nopalitos
Salad?young, grilled cactus tossed with apples, jicama, carrots,
pumpkin seeds, queso a?ejo and herbs served over mixed greens and
tossed with a tequila vinaigrette.
Every menu choice is made fresh daily, and vegetarians are most
welcome. There are several vegetarian options on the menu, and vegans
can request non-dairy entrees.
The New York Press, in its 2003 Best of Manhattan issue, named Mexican
Radio?s flan as the best in New York City. They even created a special
category, ?Best Device to Give Mexican Radio Another ?Best of? Award.?
The winner? ?Best Flan.? If that isn?t a good enough reason to try this
delicacy, there certainly isn?t one.
The New York Press got it right: the flan is a delicious, creamy
custard of eggs, milk and vanilla, dense yet light, topped with a
luscious (yet not overwhelming) caramel, a dusting of powdered sugar
and candied orange rind. If you?re on some strange diet that won?t
allow custards in your life, break it just once to have this heavenly
dessert. You will not regret it.
A full bar serves up some great margaritas, which have also been voted
as the best in New York City. These are made with your choice of
several top-of-the-line tequilas?a drink menu explains the difference,
although your server will probably be happy to guide you in the process.
Mexican Radio is located at 537 Warren Street in Hudson and at 19
